BRUNSWICK GA (Reuters) – Ahmaud Abery was chased by one of his accomplices before he was killed in a Brunswick (NYSE :), Georgia suburb in 2020. The officer said that he had a bloody look at Ahmaud and tried to find a weapon.
Gregory McMichael (65), is one of the three white men being tried for murdering Arbery (25) who they claim he may have fled a crime. They say they followed him in cars, cornered and shot him down on a street of their predominantly white neighborhood.
McMichael told police Arbery was moving fast through the neighborhood when he first spotted him, and “I’m talking about a dead run, he’s not jogging,” Glynn County Police officer Jeff Brandeberry told the court, reading from a transcript of a video recording from his body-worn camera.
McMichael and Travis McMichael (35) and William Bryan (52) pleaded not guilty in the absence of their son Travis McMichael and Travis McMichael. They were accused of killing, aggravated attack and false imprisonment during Arbery’s fatal pursuit on Feb. 23, 2020. A jury of 11 black people and one white person could convict them, and they face life imprisonment.
Prosecutors claim that the men ran through Satilla Shores, just outside Brunswick. This area had recently seen some car break-ins.
Arbery had been captured by three men trapping him. He was then seen reaching for Travis McMichael’s shotgun on camera. Arbery was shot three more times.
Brandeberry stated that he was on site shortly after shooting began and interviewed Greg McMichael. McMichael had blood on his right side.
McMichael claimed that he got blood on his own because Arbery was lying down after being shot and he moved Arbery’s hand to see if he had a weapon.
Greg McMichael explained that he didn’t know whether Arbery had a weapon. This was why Brandeberry touched his body.
Arbery wasn’t armed.
McMichael shouted for Arbery not to run as he fled, Brandeberry stated.
McMichael uttered, in accordance with the transcript Brandeberry gave to the court.
According to the officer, McMichael the elder had been carrying a gun he got from Arbery as a result of seeing him running down the street.
“I don’t take any chances,” McMichael, an ex-policeman, told police.
