U.S. proposes new marine sanctuary off California coast -Breaking

[ad_1]

(Reuters) – Tuesday’s statement by the Biden administration indicated that it is taking steps towards designating a national marine sanctuary just off central California’s coast.

Joe Biden set the goal to preserve 30% of U.S. water and land over the next decade.

According to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, this proposal will protect an area of 7,000 miles.

These waters have a significant role in the Native American Chumash heritage, who lived once on the coasts of villages now submerged. This protected area is known as Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary.

They’re located near Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara counties.

The proposal is open for public comment by NOAA until January 10.
