WASHINGTON (Reuters] – The major U.S. airlines are joining forces with Amazon.com (NASDAQ) in an effort to increase the use and development of sustainable aviation fuels to reduce emissions.

According to the Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance, Amazon Air, Alaska Airlines and JetBlue joined the alliance, including major corporate customers. This effort aims to increase SAF production and price reductions, as well as technological advances.

To support the increased market demand of SAFs, the Environmental Defense Fund and Rocky Mountain Institute created the Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance in April. It included companies like Boeing (NYSE), Bank of America (NYSE), JPMorgan Chase(NYSE), Microsoft (NASDAQ), and Netflix (NASDAQ).

The United States announced Tuesday that it had set a goal to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by the U.S. Aviation sector by 2050.

In September, The White House announced that the White House was aiming to achieve 20% less aviation emissions in 2030. The voluntary goal of 3 Billion Gallons SAF in the U.S. by 2030 was supported by major U.S. carriers.

“By working together with other companies, we are demonstrating there is strong and growing demand for the rapid deployment of cost-effective sustainable aviation fuels, which will help Amazon meet our commitment to reach net-zero carbon by 2040,” said Sarah Rhoads, vice president of Amazon Global Air.

Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci stated that the “Aviators” group within SABA “focuses on concrete steps at scale to accelerate progress.”

SABA said that Facebook’s parent Meta (NASDAQ:), and LiveNation joined.

“Making sustainable travel a reality will require extensive investment in low-carbon technologies such as sustainable aviation fuel by our entire industry,” said United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby (NYSE:).

At the climate talks in Glasgow https://www.reuters.com/business/cop, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg will represent the United States as a coalition of countries led by Britain are expected to announce the “International Aviation Climate Ambition Declaration,” Reuters reported, citing sources.

Global emissions account for almost 2.5%. Even though there’s a demand for reducing emissions, very few SAF are in use.
