WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Justice Department granted approval for Groupe Lactalis to acquire Kraft Heinz (NASDAQ) Co.’s U.S. natural dairy business, on condition Kraft Heinz sells its feta and ricotta companies.

Kraft Heinz, a French-based dairy product company, had previously announced it was selling its natural cheese business in September 2020 to the U.S. unit for $3.2billion. The company said that it would keep Philadelphia Cream Cheese Velveeta, Cheez Whiz and Velveeta from the United States.

According to the Justice Department, it said that they would accept the agreement on condition that Kraft Heinz’s Athenos-O and Polly-O businesses (which make feta, ricotta) be sold.

The department stated that the divestiture was required because Kraft Heinz and Lactalis are two of the biggest suppliers to America’s market for feta and Ricotta cheese.
