CANBERRA, (Reuters) – Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison stated on Friday that he does not believe he has lied ever since he was elected in 2007. He rejected claims made by Emmanuel Macron and other French presidents.
Macron claimed that Morrison had lied about him this month over Australia’s decision not to sign a multibillion dollar deal with France in order to build Canberra’s submarine fleet.
This week, Morrison was the target of intense criticism. He announced that his government will spend A$178million ($129.6million) on electric vehicle support. [L1N2RZ2Y3]
Morrison denied all allegations that he had lied, when Morrison was asked.
Morrison said, “No. I don’t think I have, no.”
It is politics. People take sledges at me all the time … I’ve learned in public life over a long period of time to not have a thin skin, to not get bitter.”
Morrison made these comments as Australia attempts to mend ties with France.
France claimed that Australia failed to contact it regarding the cancellation of its agreement with Australia until after Canberra’s announcement. Morrison claims that this is false and messages he had sent Macron just a week before the announcement are now being leaked to local media.
Last month, in solidarity with France the European Union postponed the second round of negotiations on a free trade agreement.
