WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden will host a virtual meeting on Monday with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, according to the White House Friday. However, officials stress that it’s unlikely to produce a lengthy list of concrete outcomes.

Jen Psaki, White House Press Secretary, stated that the two leaders would discuss how to manage responsibly the competition between the United States of China and the People’s Republic of China.

Psaki stated that President Biden would make it clear U.S. priorities and intentions throughout and will be open and honest about his concerns regarding the PRC.

Washington and Beijing disagree on everything from China’s nuclear weapons expansion to the causes of the COVID-19 epidemic. U.S. officials feel that direct engagement is the best option to stop ties among the two largest economies of the world spiraling towards conflict.

Beijing also wants to avoid conflict as Xi has a critical year ahead. Beijing hosts the Winter Olympic Games, and Xi attends the key Communist Party Congress. He is looking to win an unprecedented third term.

The Biden administration is expecting Monday’s meeting to be the largest leader-level talks between China, the United States and China to date.

According to a senior U.S. official, Biden will use the meeting as a way to express his appreciation for China’s competition, but not to create conflict. He also downplayed any possibility of long-term outcomes that are often linked to meetings with senior leaders.

The official stated that this was not about getting specific results or deliverables.

“As we compete with the PRC, President Biden expects President Xi and the PRC to play by the rules of road—and he will make that point throughout the meeting,” the official said.

Biden has signed an $1 trillion infrastructure deal with both the Democrats and Republicans. The ceremony was held Monday in celebration of domestic renewal programs that his administration feels will put America ahead of China.
