China criticizes U.S. democracy while promoting Xi’s growing power

BEIJING — A top Chinese official issued a rare criticism of the U.S. and Western democracy during a high-profile political press conference Friday.

According to an official translation, Jiang stated in Mandarin that democracy is not an exclusive property of Western nations and should be defined or dictated only by Western countries.

He stated that the electoral democracy in Western countries is actually democracy controlled by capital and was not a true democracy.

Although China’s propaganda and foreign diplomats have previously made similar critiques, Jiang’s comments stood out because of their high-profile political context and specific reference to the U.S.

Kennedy stated, “Certainly there is a lot Americans disenchanted about our political system,” without specifying a poll. It is ironic that Americans can criticize their government. China is a country where expressing an opinion like this could result in you being declared a dissident, and even get you jailed.

Xi’s New Plan for Economic Development

While Western governments are often criticized, Chinese officials on Friday praised their country’s agenda and emphasized new models in the Xi era.

Neil Thomas, Eurasia Group analyst for China, Northeast Asia, wrote that Xi was using the past in order to claim the future and serve the present.

Since 2012 when Xi reached the peak of central government power, he has been promoting his state-centric political ideology known as “Xi Thought”.
