SEOUL (Reuters: General Motors Co. (NYSE 🙂 is planning to introduce 10 electric vehicles (EVs), but it does not plan yet to make EVs for South Korean markets by 2025. This was announced Friday by Steven Kiefer (head of GM’s international operations).

The number one U.S. carmaker has a plan to build electric vehicles in China and the United States. The company also plans to construct the cars in Mexico and Canada.

After a Korean labour union delegation visited Detroit in June, Kiefer made rumors in the local media about a possible announcement of new EV production plans.

Kiefer said that no plans are yet being made to create electric vehicles in the county.

GM’s South Korea division produces 600,000. It also ships many vehicles to the United States, including the Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV. The unit employs approximately 12,000 workers. The company reported an operating loss last year of 309 trillion won ($262 millions).

Kiefer said that GM’s collaboration with South Korea’s battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution was also “very bright”.

He stated that “Clearly, more (battery capacity) is going to be needed. So stay tuned for some further announcements.”

GM and LG have built two batteries cell manufacturing plants in America with a combined annual capacity of approximately 70 gigawatts. This could be enough to power around 1,000,000 EVs.

In October, GM stated that LG units were willing to reimburse the company for up to $2 billion for estimated costs and expenses relating to a recall on Bolt electric vehicle.
