REUTERS/David GrayMELBOURNE, Reuters – Woodside (OTC) – Petroleum announced Friday that it had acquired land in Tasmania for a hydrogen plant. This is one of three hydrogen projects Tasmanian officials are promoting to make the most of their abundant wind and hydropower.
As part of an Australian push to reduce carbon emissions, the aim is to make use of renewable energy.
Woodside will work with Japan’s Marubeni Corp & IHI Corp to export approximately 200,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year to Japan. The project is being undertaken from Tasmania’s Bell Bay, beginning with 300 megawatts in electrolyser capability.
Their goal is to finalize their investment in 2023 and finish construction on H2TAS in 2025. Woodside has yet to disclose the cost of this project.
Woodside Chief Executive Meg O’Neill released a statement stating that H2TAS was already attracting interest from Woodside customers, both in Asia and Europe.
Origin Energy (OTC:) has proposed similar projects to Bell Bay.
Guy Barnett from Tasmania, the Energy Minister, stated that his state was closely working with the projects in order to build a single hub for export. He said funding could come from Australia’s A$464M ($338M) clean hydrogen hubs program. The first round of bids will close Nov. 22.
Woodside supports collaboration between proponents, with governments in strengthening Bell Bay as an economic hub,” Christine Forster from Woodside stated via email comments. She also said that the sharing of infrastructure could help reduce costs.
The company stated that government funding would be required to fund the H2TAS project.
