WARSAW, (Reuters) – Two groups of migrants were stopped by Polish officials from entering Belarus from late Thursday. This was a quieter day after a week filled with tensions, TVN24 reported.

Belarus was accused by the European Union of staging a hybrid attack on it, encouraging thousands of refugees from war-torn regions and poverty to attempt to cross to Poland. The EU is now preparing to place new sanctions against Minsk.

Migrants are trapped at two frontiers, and they have to survive freezing conditions in their makeshift camp.

According to the Polish Border Guard, there were 223 illegal attempts at crossing the border Thursday.

There were two larger incidents that evening. The first was in Kuznica Bialostocka. This is where the Belarusian military tried to push 35 people (mostly women) to the Polish side. And the second involved around 100 migrants, according to local police.

On Thursday evening, Poland was celebrating its Independence Day. President Andrzej Duba went along with him to the border.

He wrote on Twitter, “I want to thank all soldiers, policemen, border guards and anyone else who works at our frontier.” Their dedicated service is what protects our safety. We should give them our highest praise and gratefulness!

On Thursday, countries bordering Belarus warned that the crisis of migrants could turn into a conflict. Meanwhile, Ukraine stated it will deploy thousands more soldiers to strengthen its frontier.

The presidents of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania will meet Monday in Vilnius for a discussion on the crisis. They will also speak via video link with Duda, Lithuania’s presidency announced Friday.

Russia was an allies of Belarus and traded barbs over the crisis with Western U.N. Security Council members. Russia’s deputy U.N. Envoy suggested that his European counterparts have “masochist tendencies.”
