OKAYAMA (Reuters) – Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE:) Corp announced Saturday that it would partner with four Japanese car makers in order to study the potential for alternative fuels, such as hydrogen or synthetic fuels derived primarily from biomass.

These companies include Toyota, Subaru, Yamaha Motor, Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Mazda Motor (OTC) Corp. The announcement was made at a track in Okayama in western Japan where Toyota is running a hydrogen-powered car.

Toyota’s chief executive AkioToyoda and other Toyota drivers are driving the hydrogen racecar.

Although it is technically difficult to convert internal combustion engines into green fuels like hydrogen, this would enable the companies to continue to provide support for decades-old supply chains that employ hundreds of thousands of people.

Toyota is among the automakers that are increasing their production of EVs, as nations increase environmental regulations in order to reduce carbon emissions. Japan stated that it wants to become carbon-neutral by 2050, and encourages the use hydrogen fuel.

Toyota has plans to produce 15 electric vehicles by 2025. It is also investing $13.5 million over the next ten years in expanding its battery manufacturing capacity. It is also developing hydrogen-powered vehicles at the same time.
