As the plane was leaving the airport, well-wishers were waved at the terminal.
Japan was captivated by their marriage and a dialogue began about the gender roles of women and how media portrays royal families. After their three year separation, Mako was diagnosed this year with post-traumatic stress disorder. This was after Mako’s engagement was marred by an intense media coverage and a scandal involving money.
Mako, the daughter of Crown Prince Akishino & Crown Princess Kiko was granted her first passport after the wedding. She could then travel with Kei to New York where he is a lawyer.
