REUTERS/Kim Kyung-Hoon/File PhotoTOKYO (Reuters – Japan’s economic growth contracted by 3.0% annually in July-September compared to the quarter before, data from government sources showed Monday. The first decrease in two quarters since coronavirus outbreaks resurgently hampered consumer spending.
Cabinet Office data revealed that the quarterly decline in GDP (gross domestic product) was 0.8%. This is worse than economists’ average estimate of a 0.2% contraction.
The data revealed that private consumption fell by 1.1%, against a decline of 0.5% expected by economists.
