(Reuters) – Twitter Inc (NYSE: ) announced Monday that it will provide free access to all data from the social network site to software developers who want to make tools or products that can promote safer online discussions and curate content.

According to Amir Shevat of Twitter, the head of product at the developer platform for Twitter, the move is part Twitter’s effort to centralize its business over the past year.

Twitter, Facebook (NASDAQ 🙂 and the other social media giants are under scrutiny for how they present certain content to users and their contribution to spreading hate speech and misinformation.

Beginning Monday, developers will be able to access information on as many as 2 million tweets per day through Twitter’s application programming interface (API).

Shevat stated that the company had also modified its API policy in order to permit more uses, and removed restrictions from competing with Twitter.

Shevat explained that she wanted everyone to have the ability to choose their preferred content and to create their own customized content. We can do it only if developers get involved.

Block Party is an example of an app built using Twitter data. It was created by Tracy Chou, a software engineer. This allows Twitter users filter content that they don’t want to see.

Janique Ka John created an app to help users search Twitter Spaces. This is the company’s audio chat service.
