MEXICO CITY, (Reuters) – Leaders from the United States and Canada will meet to discuss North American economic integration, migration, and the outbreak of coronavirus at a summit in Mexico City this week. This was the statement by Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the Mexican president.

Lopez Obrador and Joe Biden from the United States will hold talks in Washington, Thursday. It is their first ever in-person meeting since 2016. Last time Trudeau was the only one in power.

Lopez Obrador stated that there are three main issues to address: migration, economic integration and health in relation to COVID. He also spoke out about cooperation for dealing with pandemics.

The Mexican president said labor mobility in the region would also be on the agenda, and reiterated that he did not intend to discuss a proposed electricity market reform in Mexico which has caused concern inside the U.S government https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/us-ambassador-hopes-accord-attainable-mexico-power-bill-2021-11-09.

Lopez Obrador argued that his plan to alter the constitution would give Mexico’s government-owned power company priority over any private investment in Mexico’s energy market. He cited past governments as having rigged this sector for private interest.

Critics worry that it violates Mexico’s commitments under the United States-Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Lopez Obrador said that Marcelo Ebrard (Foreign Minister), Rogelio Ramirez De la O Finance Minister, Tatiana Clouthier Economy Minister, and Hugo Lopez Gatell, the deputy health minister, would all be with Mexico’s delegation.

Lopez Obrador stated that he will travel to Washington on Wednesday and then return on Friday.

Canada’s foreign minister Melanie Joly flew to Mexico City on Monday for talks with Ebrard, ahead of the Washington Summit.

Joly, from her government, said that she would emphasize the value of working together to improve North American competability and share common challenges like climate change.
