BRUSSELS (Reuters), – Major political groups within the European Parliament demanded that the European Commission freeze the billions of euro in Polish recovery funds until Warsaw respects EU law and the rule of the law.

A letter was sent by the People’s Party (center-right), the Socialists (center-left), liberal Renew Europe and the Greens to Poland. They stated that they couldn’t trust Poland’s Nationalist Government to pay the EU’s obligations.

More than three quarters (75%) of all deputies are from these five organizations in the European Parliament. Only the eurosceptic and far-right blocs did not sign.

“We request that the Commission, guardian of Treaties,” said the letter signed by five parliamentary group.

Warsaw is at war with the EU since late 2015 when the eurosceptic PiS party came to power. The EU has accused Warsaw of attempting to change its legal system. This would violate the independence and sovereignty of the courts.

While the Commission filed suit against Poland and received judgments in European courtss, Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal was dominated entirely by members of ruling parties. It ruled that Polish laws are superior to EU laws. EU officials claim that this would undermine the legal base of the European Union.

There are 23.9 billion Euros in grants, and 12.1 Billion in loans cheap from the EU recovery fund. Warsaw may be able to get these loans in order to help rebuild its economy following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Commission must also meet certain criteria including respecting the rule of law to be eligible for the money. The European Parliament’s request will add political pressure to the Commission, urging it not to release any funds until Poland resolves its dispute.
