SYDNEY (Reuters – Google announced Tuesday that it will invest A$1Billion (736M) in Australia in five years. The announcement comes months after Google threatened to pull services out of Australia due to tighter regulation.

Alphabet’s main operation unit (NASDAQ:) Inc stated that it plans to increase cloud infrastructure and create a research center staffed with Australian engineers and researchers. It also partners with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, (CSIRO).

Mel Silva, Google Australia’s Managing Director, stated that the plan will bring substantial technology resources and investment. He had earlier threatened to stop Google’s search engine from Australia.

Scott Morrison, Australia’s Prime Minister, stated that it was an “A$1Billion vote to confidence in Australia’s Digital Economy Strategy”. This strategy aims at placing Australia in the Top 10 Digital economies by 2030.

Morrison stated that “the decision of Google has significant benefits for Australian business as it engages with the economic recovery ahead of us.” It will provide more STEM jobs for our shores, across engineering, computing science, AI,” Morrison said, using the acronym science, technology engineering and mathematics.

Silva threatened to stop Google’s search engine in Australia during January hearings before the Australian parliament. This was to avoid violating laws that force social media operators and Google to comply with. Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:) To pay news organizations for material posted on their sites

Google, however, resisted the threat and the law was passed. Instead, both Google and Facebook struck licensing deals with the majority of Australia’s major media companies.

A federal review of the law’s efficacy is expected to be launched in March by the government.

Australia also stated that it will make internet giants responsible for misinformation and defamation hosted on its platforms. This is a move which has been opposed by the tech sector.

Morrison explained that “we need to invest an equal amount in making sure that the digital universe is secure, secure, and trustable.”
