WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The United States may consider a diplomatic boycott against the Beijing Olympics. This would be aimed to protest China’s violations of human rights.
Biden replied, “Something we are considering,” when asked whether a diplomatic boycott was being considered as he met with Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister.
An American diplomatic boycott means that no delegation from the United States would attend the Beijing Winter Olympics’ opening ceremony in February.
In an effort to show international support for thousands of participants from all over the globe, high-ranking diplomats are often sent by governments to the opening ceremonies. Winter Olympics 2022 runs from February 4-20.
Biden’s administration has been urged to boycott the event by activists and members from both political parties.
China is accused by the U.S. of genocide, which Beijing refutes.
