Ford MotorThrough a partnership, plans to expand its supply of short-term and long-term semiconductor chips. GlobalFoundries.

A non-binding deal was signed Thursday by the Detroit automaker with the New York-based chip supplier. The partnership aims at increasing the supply of Ford chips from GlobalFoundries.

Officials stated that the partnership could lead to new chips designed specifically for Ford as well as an increase in domestic production and supplies of chips for all automotive industries.

Chuck Gray (Ford vice president of embedded vehicle software and controls), told CNBC that they are working on reimagining our supply chains during a phone interview. It will help us increase our independence.

Both companies refused to disclose financial details or the amount GlobalFoundries would increase Ford’s supply in the short term. The collaboration is not a cross-ownership agreement between the companies. Gray described talks as in the “early days” of their existence.

GlobalFoundries Senior Vice President Mike Hogan said that this agreement was part of an overall strategy for improving the supply chain of chips to automotive manufacturers.

“There will be some near-term expansion of capacity … but this is about building a different future,” Hogan said during the joint interview. Our strategy is based on the automotive industry.

Ford is still struggling with a shortage of semiconductor chip globally, which has sometimes caused several plant closings in the past year. The partnership follows the Biden administration’s call for companies to build their own manufacturing supply chains.

Ford CEO Jim Farley released a statement saying that the agreement “is just the start” and was a crucial part of Ford’s plan to vertically merge key technologies and capabilities. This will make Ford stand out in the future.
