TOKYO, Reuters – U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai stated that the United States could establish a new Asian economic structure with “friendly” countries and allies as soon as next year. NHK television reported this Thursday.

On Wednesday, the United States and Japan announced a new partnership in trade to increase cooperation on issues related to labour, environment, and digital trade. The emphasis was on third country concerns, a reference to China’s state-driven economic policy.

Tai visited Tokyo on Wednesday and spoke to NHK about the possibility of a new partnership being launched with countries in the Indo-Pacific.

According to her, she stated, “early next year we are looking at working with countries of the region in order to create an economic framework. This framework would include countries that share problems.”

There were no further details.

Donald Trump was the US’s former President. Tai said she would continue to work with Asia countries for trade cooperation. However, things are very different now than they were in 2015, when TPP was first negotiated.
