WASHINGTON (Reuters), – The U.S. President Joe Biden called for peaceful expression of American views following Friday’s verdict by the jury in Kyle Rittenhouse’s murder trial. Rittenhouse was convicted of killing two people during racial protests last January.

In Kenosha (Wisconsin), Rittenhouse was found innocent of all charges. The verdict came after three days of intense deliberations. It sparked fierce debate on gun rights and self-defense in the United States.

A few dozen demonstrators poured onto the streets outside of the courthouse, many carrying placards supporting Rittenhouse, and some expressing dismay.

Biden made it clear in a statement that he has spoken to Tony Evers, the Wisconsin governor to offer his support and to help ensure safety for all.

Biden declared, “While Kenosha’s verdict is likely to make Americans feel angry and concern, I included, it’s important that we acknowledge the fact that the jury did speak.”

“I encourage everyone to peacefully express their views, in compliance with the rule and law.” He stated that violence and destruction of properties are outlawed in democracy.

Rittenhouse was able to kill two men, and fire a gun that tore off an arm of another person’s body during demonstrations held in Kenosha in August 2020. This protests followed the arrest of Jacob Blake (a Black police officer).

Rittenhouse claimed self defense while the prosecution painted him as an vigilante.
