Investing.com – Biomarin stock (NASDAQ:) soared 8% Friday as a U.S. regulator approved the company’s injection aimed at improving growth in children suffering from achondroplasia.
Achondroplasia refers to a rare form of short stature that is caused by a genetic condition that causes bone loss.
The FDA has approved the drug, but the company must still conduct post-marketing studies.
Voxzogo is a drug developed by BioMarin. It works by inhibiting the activity of a gene which prevents normal bone development in people with this disorder.
In August, the European Commission approved the drug. This makes it the first treatment for achondroplasia. The company stated that marketing authorizations are currently being reviewed in Japan, Brazil and Australia, with the possibility of approvals for these countries by 2022.
BioMarin stated that Voxzogo will be made available in the U.S.A by December 31st.
