BERLIN, (Reuters) – Christian Lindner (German Free Democrats) is pushing to be finance minister of the next European government. He told a German newspaper that his fears about being a fiscal hawk are exaggerated.

According to Lindner, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper reported that he was unable to speculate publicly about the allocation of Cabinet positions as negotiations were continuing between the FDP (business-friendly), the Social Democrats (center-left) and the Greens.

After an inconclusive September election, the three sides are now in final stages of negotiations. They hope to form a government in December.

Lindner admitted that his party favors private investment over public transfer and sustainable budgeting.

“But I noticed with interest how I am portrayed as an aviator. He said that it was too wooden, and pointed out the fact that the FDP had supported the huge COVID-19 Recovery Fund of the European Union.

Linder indicated that talks about reforming the EU’s Stability and Growth Pact and the EU’s Banking Union would be held in conjunction with discussions next year.

He stated that the EU has a tremendous opportunity to fund transformations and to strengthen competition.

Germany’s push for indebtedness limits and solidity is not an orthodoxy.
