Pentagon asks Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Oracle for cloud bids

This outreach follows a Pentagon decision to rescind a controversial $10 billion contract Microsoft won, and Amazon was challenged. Although the exact value of these new contracts are not yet known, the Defense Department believes it may be in the hundreds of billions.

Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability (or JWCC) appears to be a new initiative that will support the leading providers of global cloud infrastructure, Amazon, Microsoft and Google. However, it may also give credibility to smaller entities.

In its announcement, the GSA indicated that it expected to award two IDIQ contract to Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), and one each to Microsoft Corporation, (Microsoft), however, the Government intends to award them to all Cloud Service Providers, CSPs, who demonstrate their ability to fulfill DoD requirements.

A contract referred to as indefinite delivery or indefinite quantity (IDIQ) includes an indefinite number of services that are provided for a certain period.

GSA stated that Amazon and Microsoft were the only U.S. providers of cloud infrastructure that could comply with Pentagon’s demands, which includes “tactical edge device” devices that are capable of operating outside traditional data centres.

Amazon and Microsoft were the two finalists in a joint enterprise defense infrastructure contract. This contract would have been awarded to only one company and could be worth as much as $10 billion in 10 years. Microsoft won itIn 2019, Amazon made a formal protest. The Pentagon ultimately decided to grant the request in July. cancel the contract. Each IDIQ contract will have a base period of three years and an option period of two years, according to the Pentagon.

Reps from Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Google didn’t respond immediately to our requests for comment. Oracle has declined to comment.
