WARSAW (Reuters). Despite trying to cross overnight from Belarus from smaller numbers, migrants are still crossing, Polish authorities stated on Friday. It was a day following the closing of the major camps that housed people from the Middle East at the border.

Minsk appeared to have changed its mind and cleared the camp on Thursday. This was the first flight of repatriation to Iraq for months.

However, the EU rejected Minsk’s request that it accept 2,000 migrants. This made clear that the EU was still not satisfied.

Mariusz Blaszczak, Poland’s Defense Minister, said that there are still efforts to cross the border after clearing the camp. However they were smaller than in the past when many tried to force through at once.

The Polish Border Guard stated in a Twitter that 250 attempts to cross the border were made over the last day. This is half the number of crossings the previous day. It was not clear how many occurred after Thursday afternoon’s camps had been cleared.

European countries accuse Belarus if it flew thousands of migrants illegally from the Middle East into Europe. Russia aided Belarus in denying fomenting the crisis.

It is believed that around 10 migrants have been killed while camping near the border.

Minsk took the initiative to transfer them on Thursday into a large warehouse. There, hundreds could rest on mattresses. This alleviates their humanitarian situation and prevents them from being outside in cold temperatures. Lithuania’s President Gitanas Nuseda claimed that the EU took a hard line.

Germany and the European Commission rejected Minsk’s offer to take in 2000 migrants currently living in Belarus. 5,000 would then be returned home. Minsk was accused by the United States of using migrants to disrupt its plans.
