(Reuters] – Ahmaud Abery, a Black man aged 25, was running in a mostly-white neighborhood on Feb. 23, 2020 when he was chased and shot by three white men with two trucks. The incident occurred about 2 km (3.2km) from Ahmaud’s mother’s home near Brunswick (NYSE):, Georgia.

This is the timeline for the case.

FEB. 23, 2020

Arbery left his mom’s house on Sunday at 11 a.m. for a walk just outside Brunswick, Georgia.

A four-lane highway led him into Satilla Shores. It was lined by saw palmettos and old oaks adorned with Spanish Moss. There were also ranch-style homes along with docks for boats on the Little Satilla River.

Greg McMichael (working on his boat cushions) is just 2 miles into McMichael’s run. McMichael tells police that he believed Arbery was fleeing from crime. According to police reports, he shouts at his son Travis McMichael for him to buy a gun. They then chase each other in a pickup truck. The encounter is then recorded by William Bryan (a neighbor) on his pickup truck.

Arbery after being boxed by trucks is captured on video reaching out for Travis McMichael’s shotgun. Arbery dies after being shot three times. He then runs and falls on the streets.

Glynn Police officers question Bryan and McMichaels but don’t file charges. This is according to Jackie Johnson (Buncomb Judicial Circuit’s District Attorney). A grand jury was eventually found.

Greg McMichael is a former Glynn Policeman who also worked for Johnson as an Investigator.

Feb. 24, 2020

Johnson, who is connected to McMichael, recuses herself and gives it off to Waycross Judicial Circuit.

FEB. 27, 2020

Court records indicate that George Barnhill, Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney, officially took the case at Johnson’s request.

April 7, 2020

Barnhill resigns from the case. He told his boss Chris Carr, Georgia Attorney General, that he did not realize that his son had worked in Johnson’s office with Greg McMichael.

Carr sends the case to Tom Durden, Atlantic Circuit District Attorney.

May 5, 2020

Brunswick’s WGIG radio station receives a copy from Bryan and uploads it online. This video goes viral online and sparks a national panic. Durden announced a grand jury investigation within hours. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp directs the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), which takes over the investigation the next day.

May 7, 2020

GBI investigators arrested the McMichaels. They were each charged with murder. The shooting took place 74 days ago.

May 11, 2020

Durden steps down and Georgia Attorney general Carr appoints Cobb County’s District Attorney Joyette Holmes as lead prosecution. Cobb becomes the fourth District Attorney to handle the case.

21 May 2020

Bryan was arrested and indicted by GBI agents.

On June 24, 2020

The grand jury indicts the three accused on murder, assault, and false imprisonment.

Nov. 3, 2020

Johnson, the Brunswick Judicial Circuit district attorney, lost her re-election campaign after a grassroots campaign spurred by Arbery.

Sept. 2, 2021

A grand jury indicted Johnson for “showing affection and favor” towards the McMichaels. Johnson is being charged with violating the oaths of office as well as obstruction of law enforcement officers.

The media has heard her tell that she didn’t do anything wrong, and currently she is out on a $10,000 bond.
