PARIS (Reuters) –France will send police special forces in Guadeloupe to restore order amid protests against COVID-19 protocols.

Darmanin, Overseas Territory Minister Sebastien lecornu and Darmanin shared their concerns about the Caribbean’s situation with reporters.

Darmanin stated that France will send approximately 50 members of its GIGN elite tactical forces and the police to the territory. The territories have seen looting and shots at police and the arrest of 31 individuals overnight.

Darmanin stated that the additional forces will raise Guadeloupe’s police force and gendarmes to 2250.

Lecornu reported that Jean Castex, the Prime Minister, will meet with Guadeloupe officials Monday to discuss this situation.

Guadeloupe’s prefect Alexandre Rochatte is the representative of the French government in the archipelago. He imposed Friday a curfew between 6 p.m. and 5 a.m. following five days’ civil unrest, during which firebombs were set off and workers and doctors went on strike.

In a bulletin on Twitter (NYSE:) referring to vandalism, Rochatte later said that damage to electrical works near dams, especially by one in Capesterre-Belle-Eau, was causing outages to many customers, and warned it represented an electrocution risk.

On Monday, trade unions protested the mandatory vaccination of healthcare workers against COVID-19.
