LYON (France) – Olympique de Marseille and Olympique de Lyonnais were forced to abandon their match after Dimitri Payet, from Marseille, was struck by a bottle thrown from the Groupama Stadium. This caused chaos in France’s Ligue 1.

Payet collapsed as he tried to get ready for a corner kick. Both teams were then sent to Ruddy Buquet’s dressing room, where they decided to end the match.

Payet was, according to French League (LFP), also subject to “discriminatory remarks”. He left the pitch wearing an icepack on his head.

Initial announcements from the stadium stated that the game would resume. Lyon then took to the pitch for warm-up.

Jorge Sampaoli and the Marseille players remained in the dressing rooms until the end.

“The stadium announcer believes that safety conditions have not been met,” said the referee.

Crowd trouble has marred Ligue 1 this season.

Two points were taken from Nice and one was suspended. This happened after several incidents against Marseille’s players. They clashed with the home fans, who bombarded them with missiles in August.

Lille and RC Lens were also both affected by September crowd troubles. In the end, Lille’s northern derby was delayed about 30 minutes due to rival supporters throwing objects at each others.

Crowd trouble has been reported in Montpellier, Angers and Marseille as well as St Etienne.
