Investing.com — GoDaddy Inc (NYSE:) shares are down 4.6% Monday after it reported a data breach warning that up to 1.2 million accounts had their email address and customer number exposed.

According to the Securities and Exchange Commission, the website-hosting company found third-party unauthorised access to Managed WordPress last Wednesday (November 17). WordPress can be used to set up websites and blogs.

We discovered suspicious activity within our Managed WordPress hosting environment. With the assistance of an IT Forensics company, we immediately started an investigation and reached out to law enforcement. GoDaddy said that an unauthorised third party had accessed our Managed WordPress provisioning system using a compromised password.

GoDaddy said that although its investigation continues, it found out on September 6 that an “unauthorized third-party” had exploited the vulnerability to gain access information such as customer phone numbers, email addresses, initial WordPress admin passwords. It also discovered active customers’ FTP usernames and passwords.

It also stated that the company was sorry for “this incident” and for any inconvenience it caused customers.
