NEW DELHI (Reuters – India was invited to the United States to discuss ways to settle differences regarding digital trade and market access. This came at the end of a two-day visit to the United States by Katherine Tai, the U.S Trade Representative.

Both countries’ negotiators have been trying for over a year now to reach a comprehensive trade agreement. Washington and New Delhi have fought on a variety of issues including tariffs.

Tai raised questions about restrictions on market access, high tariffs and unpredicted regulations, as well as restricted digital trade.

Tai stated that “these are areas where we plan to make progress” and told Indian officials during an Indian dinner hosted by PiyushGoyal, Commerce Minister.

After a four-year gap, both countries agreed to relaunch their Trade Policy Forum. This forum will discuss how to improve trade relations.

Goyal spoke at the dinner, “We were uniquely given the task by our leaders, President Biden and PM Modi to strengthen economic ties and trade that is based on fairness and transparency.”

This meeting comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Washington in September.

Tai stated that there was huge growth potential in areas like digital economy, agriculture and health services.

She said that the revived Trade Policy Forum might help to expand bilateral trade, which has not seemed to be living up to its potential.

Indian officials indicated that they would be discussing the WTO Ministerial Conference in Geneva between Nov. 30 and Dec. 3, with U.S. officials.

In an attempt to combat Chinese influence within the Indo-Pacific, the U.S.-Indian relationships have been growing closer. Both countries formed the Quad group and joined Japan and Australia as part of the Quad group.
