(Reuters) –Ahmaud, a Black 25-year old man, was running in a predominantly white area on February 23, 2020. He was pursued by two white men in trucks and shot to death about 2 miles (3 km) from his mom’s home near Brunswick (NYSE;), Georgia.

The following is the chronology of this case:

FEB. 23, 2020

Arbery left his mom’s house on Sunday at 11 a.m. for a walk just outside Brunswick, Georgia.

The four-lane road that leads to Satilla Shores was lined with old oaks and Spanish moss-draped saw palmettos. Ranch-style homes have boat docks on the Little Satilla River.

Greg McMichael (working on his boat cushions) is just 2 miles into McMichael’s run. McMichael told police later that he suspected Arbery had fled from a crime. Police reports state that he shouted to Travis McMichael, his son, to get a gun. He and McMichael then ran off in his pickup truck. The encounter is then recorded by William Bryan (a neighbor) on his pickup truck.

Arbery, after being boxed by trucks is captured reaching for the shotgun Travis McMichael has pointed at him. Arbery dies after being shot three times. He then runs and falls on the streets.

Glynn county police officers interviewed Bryan and McMichaels, but they did not press charges. They followed directions Jackie Johnson, Brunswick Judicial Circuit district attorney. A grand jury was later established.

Greg McMichael was a Glynn County former policeman and also served as investigator for Johnson.

Feb. 24, 2020

Johnson, who is connected to McMichael, recuses herself and gives it off to Waycross Judicial Circuit.

FEB. 27, 2020

Court records indicate that George Barnhill, Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney, officially took the case at Johnson’s request.

April 7, 2020

Barnhill decides to withdraw himself from the case and tells his boss, Georgia Attorney general Chris Carr that his son worked previously with Greg McMichael at Johnson’s Office.

Carr transfers the case from the Atlantic Circuit to Tom Durden, the District Attorney.

May 5, 2020

Brunswick’s WGIG radio station receives a copy from Bryan and uploads it online. This video goes viral online and sparks a national panic. Durden immediately announces the establishment of a grand jury. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp ordered the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI), to investigate the matter the same day.

April 7, 2020

GBI investigators arrested the McMichaels. They were each charged with murder. The shooting took place 74 days ago.

May 11, 2020

Durden is forced to resign and Georgia Attorney General Carr nominates Joyette Holmes, Cobb County District Attorney, as the lead prosecutor. Cobb becomes the fourth District Attorney to handle the case.

21 May 2020

Bryan is arrested by the GBI and charged with murder.

On June 24, 2020

All three defendants are indicted by a grand jury on the charges of murder, false imprisonment and aggravated assault.

Nov. 3, 2020

Johnson, who was the Brunswick Judicial Circuit’s District Attorney for 10 years, is defeated in her bid to reelect herself. This follows a grassroots campaign, sparked by the Arbery trial.

Sept. 2, 2021

A grand jury indicted Johnson for “showing affection and favor” towards the McMichaels. Johnson was charged with violating an oath and hindering law enforcement officers.

According to media reports, she has said that nothing was wrong with her and is now on bond for $10,000.

Oct. 18, 2021

The trial begins. The jury is assembled from 11 members of the white community and 1 member of the black community. It takes thirteen days. They are all being trial together.
