GENEVA, (Reuters) – A United Nations expert on human rights said Monday that some electoral laws in the United States, including Texas could undermine democracy and deprive millions of minority voters of their right to vote.
Fernand de Varennes spoke on the last day of his two-week long official visit to the United States. He decried Texas legislation as he claimed it resulted “gerrymandering” and the dilution in voting rights for ethnic minorities.
“It’s becoming very apparent that there is almost a tyranny in the majority, where the minorities right to vote are being denied in many parts of the nation,” he said at a press conference.
