BRUNSWICK GA (Reuters) – Deliberations in Georgia’s murder trial of Ahmaud Abery and three other white men were to commence Tuesday. Prosecutors claim that Ahmaud was running in the neighborhood with the white defendants.
More than 20 witnesses have been called to the witness stand since Travis McMichael was sworn in over two weeks ago. He claimed that he fired his shotgun at Arbery for self defense.
McMichael is 35 years old. His father Gregory McMichael 65 and William Bryan 52 have pleaded not guilty. They were accused of murder, assault, and false imprisonment. The killing took place in Satilla Shores (Coast Suburb) on February 23, 2020.
They claimed they had the right to chase Arbery in their pickup trucks under the citizen’s arrest law of southern U.S. states. Bryan’s cell phone video captured the incident and caused outrage.
They claim that they were able to prove Arbery’s involvement in recent property crimes which had put the neighbourhood on edge. Arbery never stole anything from Satilla Shores on his many runs wearing a shorts and a T-shirt.
After a day of closing arguments at Glynn County Superior Court on Monday, Cobb County’s district attorneys began their last rebuttal Tuesday morning. This has been the focal point of the quiet harbor town Brunswick (NYSE:).
“What authority did they have against Ahmaud Dochy?” Linda Dunikoski, the lead prosecutor, asked the jury. “None whatsoever.”
Dunikoski claimed that Arbery did not possess the probable suspicion necessary to hold him under the amended law and that Arbery has a constitutional right not to answer any questions his truckers shouted at.
Travis McMichael said that he had no idea what Arbery was doing when he passed the McMichaels’ driveway. Arbery was wearing sneakers and jogging clothes.
Laura Hogue (the elder McMichael lawyer) tried to portray Arbery, a terrifying, disgusting criminal with long dirty toenails, in closing arguments. These comments angered Arbery’s parents who claimed they were blatantly rude and upset scores of Arbery supporters, who rallied under the grand oak trees at the courthouse.
Travis McMichael claimed that McMichael tried to fight McMichael with the shotgun. McMichael fired in self-defense. Dunikoski stated that McMichael pointed a gun at Arbery first and it was aggravated assault. Someone cannot use self-defense if they have committed a crime, or excessive force for their defense.
Bryan’s lawyer claimed that Bryan wasn’t smart enough to know what McMichaels were doing when he got in his pickup truck and joined the chase.
Timothy Walmsley from Superior Court was scheduled to provide lengthy instructions for the eleven-member juror of black men, women and white people before the case goes forward. These instructions include a description and explanation of the citizens’ arrest law, which was argued out loudly in front of Walmsley outside the earshot of the jury.
