SINGAPORE (Reuters – Singapore aims to realize at least 2,000,000 tonnes carbon capture potential by 2030, as part of a larger effort to make Jurong Island’s oil refinery hub more sustainably.

A variety of industries see the potential for carbon dioxide to be captured through storage, or reuse as an option in order to meet their green objectives. However, the technology is still being developed.

Singapore intends to set up a laboratory for technology testing on Jurong Island. It is home to Royal Dutch Shell and other companies. Exxon Mobil (NYSE:) Own Petrochemical Plants

Exxon, Shell, and Exxon both indicated an interest in carbon capture and storage in Southeast Asia.

EDB Singapore has also set 2030 targets for energy and chemicals sectors to boost sustainable product production by 1.5x from current levels.

Singapore aims to quadruple its output by 2050 from the levels of 2019.

By shifting from fossil fuels to renewables and increasing investment, governments and corporations are pushing for the reduction of global warming.

Shell announced Tuesday that it will build a pyrolysis upgrader for plastic waste at its Singapore petrochemical plant. This is part of the company’s shift away from oil and gasoline to low-carbon, renewable energy.
