WASHINGTON (Reuters] – On Tuesday, the U.S. Justice Department stated that it filed an Antitrust Lawsuit to prevent U.S. Sugar Corp. From buying its rival Imperial Sugar Co.

According to the department, the suit was filed because of the possibility that the transaction could lead to higher refined sugar prices in the southeast United States.

“U.S. Sugar and Imperial Sugar are already multibillion-dollar corporations and are seeking to further consolidate an already cozy sugar industry,” said Assistant Attorney General Jonathan Kanter of the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division.

U.S. Sugar declared in March it was buying Imperial Sugar (which has operations in Georgia, Kentucky) from Louis Dreyfus Co.
