(Reuters) – Matthew Calamari, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Chief Operating Officer for Trump Organization is not going to be charged in a case of fraud in which the ex-US president and his firm’s chief financial officer were both indicted.
“Mr. Calamari was pleased to hear that the District Attorney’s Office has stated that they have no intention of charging him. This is the right and fair decision. Calamari has not committed any crimes and lived an example of good behavior,” Nicholas Gravante, Calamari’s attorney, stated in an email statement Tuesday.
Cyrus Vance’s Manhattan District Attorney office declined to comment.
In July, the Trump Organization was indicted by Allen Weisselberg and his CFO for tax fraud. The charges stemmed from an investigation into Trump’s business practices and operations.
Indictment stated that the company offered perks such as rent-free apartments or leased cars to Weisselberg, and other officials who did not report on their tax returns. Weisselberg as well as the company have pleaded not guilty. Trump hasn’t been charged.
Reuters was informed by a source that the Manhattan District Attorney had called a second grand jury earlier this month to consider new charges against the Trump Organization. A second grand jury would examine the company’s assets.
Vance, in cooperation with Letitia Jams of New York State Attorney general, investigated the case. Trump has called these charges politically motivated.
Trump’s business operates resorts, hotels and golf courses around the globe. Trump, who entered the White House on January 17, 2017, put it in a trust that was overseen by his sons Eric Jr. (and Weisselberg).
Matthew Calamari Jr., Calamari’s father, gave evidence before a grand jury in September. A source informed Reuters that Calamari Jr. is exempt from any prosecution.
