(Reuters) – On Wednesday, the centre-left Social Democrats and Greens presented their three-way agreement to form a government that will replace the conservative Angela Merkel’s coalition.

Below are some reactions from business leaders.

CHRISTIAN KLEIN is the SAP CEO

“Our country is facing huge challenges. “Our country is facing enormous challenges. The pandemic exposed numerous deficits and showed that we lack a coordinated approach. Rapid and thorough digitisation are essential if Germany is to be economically prosperous in the long-term.

The new German government places emphasis on sustainability and climate protection for air transport. However, it is committed to international competition and is working towards international regulation. It is right. The environment is not impacted by regulations that unilaterally burden domestic airlines in the highly competitive air transport sector.

It sets a good example for the future of air transportation technologies. It’s positive to see that funds raised from the air tax can be used in the future for sustainable aviation fuels. It is an important contribution to climate conservation. This will ensure that the taxes paid by passengers and businesses for air travel are used to transform the industry.

We are pleased to see the federal government making clear its intention to speed up the development of the charging infrastructure, with particular emphasis on the fast charging network. For a successful ramp up of electric mobility and customer acceptance, the key ingredients are nondiscriminatory public charging and an expansion prior to demand. A clear signal is the commitment to European expansion goals.

OLA KAELLENIUS, CEO OF DAIMLER:

When I first looked at the agreement I was struck by three things: 1,000,000 charging points, 15 million electric cars and 80% renewable electricity.

These are the three key goals that 2030 will set to support the industry’s transformation. These goals correspond with Mercedes-Benz’s strategy. So electric cars will be more popular and greener. We will see positive changes in society, the economy, and state with higher investments and faster approvals. This combination of ambitious climate protection and improved competitiveness will propel us forward.

LEONHARD BIRNBAUM is CEO of E.ON

The coalition agreement’s stronger climate policy focus is significant. It is a positive sign that the coalition recognizes network infrastructure’s importance as the backbone for the energy transition, especially in terms of financing and investment conditions.
