PARIS (Reuters), – France, Britain and Britain asked for answers Thursday about how they could discourage migrants trying to cross the ocean separating them. After 27 people drowned in an inflatable dinghy while trying to do so in France, it was the most serious accident in Channel history.

Boris Johnson, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and President Emmanuel Macron had divergent opinions about who should be held responsible for this tragedy.

Macron stressed that both the French and British governments share the responsibility in a Wednesday night phone conversation with Johnson. Johnson claimed that Britain has had difficulties convincing France to solve the problem the right way.

Jean Castex, French Prime Minister, was to host a crisis meeting Thursday morning. However authorities have announced that the tragedy has led to five suspected people being held as smugglers.

Priti Patel (British Interior Minister) said she was meeting Gerald Darmanin, the French counterpart. Darmanin said Britain, Belgium, Germany and France needed to work together to tackle illegal migrants and human traficking.

Darmanin said that “it’s an international concern” to RTL radio.

Britain claimed that the drownings showed how inept French police were at protecting their borders and patrolling their beaches.

Johnson admitted that Johnson was having difficulty convincing some of his partners, especially the French, into addressing the problem in a manner they believe is best for the situation.

He reiterated his offer for joint British-French surveillance of northern France’s coast, near Calais. From here you can see Britain on clear days and most migrants set out to reach England.

Paris had previously rejected such demands. London had in the past threatened financial assistance to France for border policing, if they fail to stop the flow.

After the British and French government clamped down other illegal entry methods, including hiding behind trucks that cross from France ports, the Channel has seen a surge in migrants trying to cross it.

Darmanin said London was guilty of “bad immigrant management.”

Campaigners for Brexit saw regaining control of Britain’s borders as a key to their campaign ahead of the 2016 referendum regarding Britain’s membership in the European Union.

Reuters observed one group of migrants arriving from the sand dunes at Wimereux and Calais. They then piled into an inflatable dinghy. After crossing the 30-km stretch of water, the same group was seen arriving in Dungeness, south England hours later.
