WARSAW, (Reuters) – A group of migrants set off a riot at a Western Polish detention center on Thursday demanding better conditions and a transfer from Germany or Iraq.

Many thousands of migrants have been left behind on Europe’s Eastern Frontier by the EU. This crisis Minsk created, according to the EU, when it distributed Belarussian visas in Middle East and flew them across the border.

Poland has been repressing those who tried to cross the Belarusian border. Some of them are being held at detention centers such as Wedrzyn, while they await an answer on their eligibility to remain in Poland.

It was a revolt. Wasik said that over 100 migrants started to demolish the houses in which they lived, breaking windows and tearing down bars. They also demanded better conditions such as freedom or deportation from Iraq.

Wasik stated that 600 people were present at the centre, and some joined the group. However, the situation was soon under control by police and border guards.

Stanislaw Zayn, the spokesperson for Poland’s special services said separately on radio that many of them were originally from Iraq. They wanted to go to Western Europe and mainly Germany.

Poland’s Border Guard stated that 217 persons tried to illegally cross the border from Belarus.
