WASHINGTON (Reuters] – Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s Republican representative Lauren Boebert apologized for suggesting that Ilhan Omar, a liberal Democratic member, was part of a “jihad group” at Capitol Hill.

“I sincerely apologize to the Muslim community for my offensive comment on Rep. Omar. She has reached out to me to discuss this. Boebert stated on Twitter that there are many policy differences we can focus on and avoid unnecessary distractions.

After a Twitter video of her at an event in Colorado, she apologized. She said that she was trying to get into an elevator and saw a Capitol officer run towards her.

“I see fret all over his face, and he’s reaching, and the door’s shutting, like I can’t open it, like what’s happening. I turn to my left and see her. Ilhan Omar. And I said, ‘Well, she doesn’t have a backpack, we should be fine,'” she said.

She stated that it wasn’t her first “jihad squad” moment.

Boebert belongs to a small group of Republican House legislators who claim they support Trump and often attack their Congress colleagues with insults and slurs. Her first term is over.

Omar said on Twitter the event described by Boebert in the video never happened, and that “Anti-Muslim bigotry isn’t funny & shouldn’t be normalized.”

Omar posted, “Saying that I’m a suicide bomber” is not a joke. Omar called for Kevin McCarty, House Republican Leader and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi “appropriate actions.”
