WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The U.S. President Joe Biden called for nations to meet at the World Trade Organization next Wednesday to decide to lift intellectual property protections on COVID-19 vaccines. This was in response to the discovery in South Africa of a coronavirus variant.

Biden stated in a statement that “the news about the new variant should be clearer than ever because this pandemic won’t end until global vaccines are available.”

“This announcement today reiterates how important it is to move quickly on (waiving Intellectual Property Protections).
