GENEVA (Reuters), – Friday was a warning from the World Health Organisation, warning countries not to impose travel restrictions based on COVID-19’s B.1.1.529 variation. It said they must adopt a risk-based and scientific approach.

Christian Lindmeier, WHO spokesperson said that “at this point, it is being cautioned against” during a briefing at the U.N. in Geneva. The WHO suggests that all countries maintain a scientific and risk-based approach to implementing travel precautions.

On Friday, the WHO convened an expert meeting in order to determine whether this constitutes a variant or concern. He stated that he would share additional guidance with governments about what they could do.

The variant will be understood over the next few weeks by researchers. They are also working on vaccine development and therapeutics.
