France says it is willing to discuss autonomy for Guadeloupe -Breaking

PARIS (Reuters) – France would be open to discussing autonomy for Guadeloupe in France’s French Caribbean territory, Sebastien Lecornu, a minister of government said.
Guadeloupe has seen protests for several days against COVID-19, which have exploded into violence.
Lecornu (minister for France’s territories overseas) stated in a late Friday YouTube video that some elected officials from Guadeloupe raised questions about autonomy and changing the status of Guadeloupe as an oversea region.
The government is open to discussing this. “There are no bad arguments, so long as they serve to solve real daily problems in Guadeloupe,” said he.
He said that this was only one of many measures the Paris government will take to Guadeloupe. Other initiatives include improving healthcare and infrastructure, as well as a plan to create young jobs.
This week, the French government announced it was postponing the requirement for public sector workers in Guadeloupe or Martinique to get COVID-19 vaccines.
This had led to protests and a resurgence of long-held grievances regarding living standards, Parisian relations and Paris.
Guadeloupe has a history of mistrust in French government handling health crises. Many people have been exposed to pesticides that were used on banana plantations during the 1970s.
