BERLIN (Reuters – Germany stated on Sunday that it is continuing to cooperate with the United States in implementing a deal for the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. This pipe, which crosses the Baltic Sea, carries natural gas from Russia to Germany.

The foreign ministry of Germany said that it continues to work closely with the U.S. government on an agreement for the joint declaration regarding the $11-billion pipeline.

While the Biden administration lifted sanctions from Transadria Ltd, and struck a deal to do business with Germany in July and August respectively, last week they imposed additional sanctions that were aimed at Transadria Ltd’s vessel and Russia-linked Transadria Ltd.

It stated that it fundamentally rejected sanctions among allies in response to a question from Reuters regarding a report published by Axios. According to Axios’s account, Berlin asked members of Congress to not sanction Nord Stream 2 because they would be “weakening” U.S. credibility as well as “ultimately damaging transatlantic unity.”

Some European countries and the United States oppose the bypass of Ukraine by the pipeline.

Although they believe it would increase Europe’s dependence on Russian gas for energy, some European governments insist the link is crucial to ensure that Europe has sufficient supply of its own natural gas.

Germany is willing to take steps if Russia uses its energy for weapons in relations with Ukraine. But the deal doesn’t specify what criteria that might be used.

A Nov. 19 document was cited by Axios, a news website. It outlined steps Germany would take. This included “strong public messages” decrying Russia and the assessment of suspending political meetings.

Axios reported that Germany participated at EU-level in the identification of options for restrictive measures.

Axios said that Nord Stream 2 did not pose a threat to Ukraine so long as gas transit is allowed. He also referred potential sanctions to the pipeline to Putin as a “victory for Putin” since it would cause divisions among Western allies.
