According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.5 struck northern Peru.
It occurred at 5.52 am Sunday (1152 GMT). While it was extremely strong, it was relatively deep, — measured at 112 kilometers — which usually reduces damage and casualties.
It was situated 42km (26 miles) northeast of Barranca.
According to witnesses and local media, a 14-meter-tall tower of a four-century-old protected church fell shortly after Sunday’s 7.5-degree earthquake in northern Peru.
The historic tower was part of an 16th century complex and is considered to be the oldest Catholic Temple in Amazonas. It was seen reduced to a heap of stones by video and online photos, though the main atrium appears to remain standing.
Other locations were also damaged in social media posts, such as a southern Ecuadorian church. Colombia also experienced the quake.
Peru’s Defense Ministry’s National Civil Defense Institute did not immediately report damage or injuries from the earthquake.
Peru is home to 85% of Earthquakes.
