(Reuters) – Enbridge (NYSE) Inc and Capital Power Corp agreed to be partners in a carbon capture & storage (CCS) Project. This project would help to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 3 million tonnes per year, they said Monday.

Capital Power’s Genesee Generating Station, near Warburg in Alberta, would be served by the proposed project. It currently supplies over 1,200 megawatts baseload electricity generation for Albertans.

Alberta is Canada’s largest oil producer. As the world moves away fossil fuel consumption, and seeks to lower climate-warming carbon emission, Alberta will be an important hub for carbon storage.

Enbridge would provide transportation and storage services. Capital Power would supply carbon dioxide. This project may be operational as soon as 2026.

Enbridge will transport the captured carbon dioxide emissions of the re-powered units and keep them in its open access carbon hub. This could also be used by several local industrial firms.

Enbridge submitted an application to build an open access carbon hub for the Wabamun region through the Request for Full Project Proposals process of the government in Alberta. It is anticipated that the project will begin as early as December 2021.

Several companies, including TC Energy (NYSE;), Suncor Energy(NYSE:), Royal Dutch Shells (LON:), and Suncor Energy (NYSE 🙂 plan to construct new CCS storage units.
