MADRID, Reuters – Tourism in Europe has recovered faster than any other country from coronavirus in the third quarter 2021. This was according to a U.N. Report.

According to U.N. World Tourism Organisation, international tourists arrived at 58% higher rates in July and September than in the same period in 2020. This was 64% less than in the previous pre-pandemic period.

Europe achieved the greatest relative performance with 53% less international arrivals than the same season in 2019.

According to the report, “The increase in demand was driven primarily by higher traveller confidence and rapid progress in vaccinations as well the relaxation of many restrictions for entry in many destinations.”

“In Europe, after years of travel restrictions, the EU Digital Covid Certificate has allowed for free movement in the European Union. This allows large amounts to be accessed, which is a huge relief.”

According to the report, global tourist arrivals were 76% lower than they were pre-pandemic. There was uneven performance in different parts of the globe between January and September.

European arrivals fell by 8% in comparison to the period 2020, but 69% more than 2019.

Americas saw the most impressive results in January and September. Although arrivals were up by 1% over 2020, they are still below the 2019 level.

It was the Caribbean that posted the most impressive results subregionally, seeing arrivals increase by 55% over the nine-month period of 2021, compared with the same time in 2020. However, this is still only 38% lower than 2019.

The report said that the global pace of recovery for the tourism industry in the third quarter was still uneven.

This is because of varying levels of travel restrictions, vaccination rates, and traveller confidence.
