New York City has issued a strong recommendation that all citizens wear masks indoors, regardless of whether they have been vaccinated. It is in light of concerns about the highly-mutated Covid strain omicron.

A commissioner’s advisory is also being issued strongly suggesting that New Yorkers use a mask whenever they are indoors or in public. As in your grocery store, building lobbies or offices and retail outlets,” Dr. David Chokshi told reporters at a status update.

Chokshi and Bill de Blasio, the outgoing mayor of New York City, said that New York City has yet to identify any cases. They stressed the importance of vaccination as a tool to defeat Covid-19.

At the moment, there are no known cases in New York City of Omicron. De Blasio stated that it is likely they will, however there are not any cases right now. Our focus will once more be on vaccines. We know that vaccination is essential to any strategy of addressing the omicron.

De Blasio advised parents to give their children vaccines between the ages of 5 and 11 years. New Yorkers should also get booster shots, De Blasio said.
