(Reuters) – On Sunday, former U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper sued the Department of Defense because it withheld parts of a memoir that he wrote about time he was in Trump’s government.

Esper stated that the book “A Sacred Oath” sheds light upon events which occurred in Trump’s second term.

He stated in a statement that the Department had “arbitrarily” redacted his manuscript following his submission to DoD officials.

Esper’s lawsuit stated that “Significant text” is being kept from publication under the pretense of classification. Esper filed a lawsuit in federal court claiming that the withheld text was crucial for telling important stories in the manuscript.

From June 2019 through November 2020, Esper was Trump’s Defense Secretary. He was then fired due to disagreements on policy matters.

Esper was a vocal opponent to Trump’s threats of using active military force to crush street protests about racial justice after George Floyd was shot to death in Minneapolis.

A Reuters inquiry for comment, sent at night hours by the DoD, was not promptly answered.
