(Reuters) -Becton Dickinson and Co stated Tuesday that it is confident its COVID-19 test will be able detect Omicron, a new variant of coronavirus.
It sells several COVID-19 tests, including antigen as well as PCR. It began shipping home rapid COVID-19 testing in October. The tests can be confirmed using an automated smartphone app.
Becton also said it had conducted analyses of the variant using all available genome sequences from the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID) — the largest database of novel coronavirus genome sequences in the world.
It added that millions of genomes had been analyzed and none undetectable variants were found.
The company’s announcement follows Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc (NYSE 🙂 confirming that it can detect Omicron variants with its diagnostic tests.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Omicron was last week designated a SARS CoV-2 “variant concern” and warned that it might spread quicker than other forms.
